GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 9

IN BOX

Treatment available for military anti-lesbian harassment

by Doreen Cudnik

The Chronicle staff would like to extend a heart felt thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to make the move to our new building in September as painless as possible. We appreciate your efforts.

The American Association of Physicians for Human Rights chose National Coming Out Day to come out of the euphemistic closet.

The group, which represents 1,550 gay and lesbian doctors and medical students in North America, changed its name to better reflect its mission. It is now called the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, or GLMA.

"As an organization dedicated to eliminating the necessity of the closet, we felt we had an obligation to be an out and honest and clear about who we are," said Ben Schatz, the group's executive director.

Schatz said the group has always been straightforward about its goal of improving medical care for gays and lesbians, and supporting gay and lesbian physicians.

Dr. Debra Goran of the Cleveland Vet Center says that treatment is available to women veterans who have experienced sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape or other acts of sexual violence while in the military. This treatment is free and includes long term after effects of anti-gay harassment, and of gay and lesbian "witch hunts" or other acts of harassment or persecution towards lesbians in the military. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Dr. Debra Goran at 216-671853 on Cleveland's West Side, or 216932-8471 on the East Side, or call 614-228-3853 in Columbus.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently announced a new daily feature which started October 17. “Grapevine," in the Metro section, will be a column where readers can share their special events and personal achievments with the community. Let's make sure that they don't forget to represent gay and lesbian lives in

this daily column. Send your good news and personal milestones to Grapevine, The Plain Dealer, 1801 Superior Ave., Cleveland, 44114. Or if you prefer, use the Metro fax number: 216-999-6354. Include

your name, address and telephone number.

Make it a point to look for Reclaiming Pride: Daily Reflections On Gay and Lesbian Life by Joseph H. Neisen, Ph.D. Each daily affirmation begins with a quotation from gay and lesbian luminaries such as Audre Lorde, Harvey Milk, Rita Mae Brown and Paul Monette, and discusses issues such as coming out, living honestly, loving openly and taking pride in who we are. The author, Dr. Neisen, is currently program director at the Pride Institute in Minneapolis, which provides alcohol and drug treatment services for the lesbian, gay and bisexual community. Check your local

bookstore to see that they are carrying it, or you can order direct from the publisher by calling Health Communications, Inc. at 800-441-5569.

The Names Project benefits from prepaid long-distace phone cards from AmeriVox. The two cards, which can be sent as gifts feature the work of artists Mary Engelbreit and David McLimans, and are available with a $5 or $20 phone time value. These cards are renewable, and are available by writing the Names Project Foundation, 310 Townsend Street, Suite 310, San Francisco, CA 94107, or by calling Fred Dolaway at 415-882-5500.

Check back here for future items of interest, and be sure to keep the Chronicle informed of things that you know are happening in the community. Remember, this is your newspaper, and input from our readers is not only welcome, but vital to our existence. ♡
